Analects — 学而时习之
“Learning and practicing it regularly—surely this brings joy?” These opening words of the *Analects* do not begin with doctrine or command, but with an invitation to notice one’s own experience. The passage appears in the very first chapter, “Xue Er,” and sets a tone rooted in lived practice rather than abstract theory. Here, “learning” means more than absorbing texts—it is imitation, effort, and engagement with what matters; “practicing regularly” implies returning to that learning not as repetition, but as renewal. As later commentary clarifies, “study” (xue) is fundamentally “imitation” or “effort to follow,” while “practice” (xi) is the act of re-engaging what has been taken in—not merely reviewing, but embodying. The joy named is not fleeting pleasure, but the quiet satisfaction that arises when understanding deepens through steady return.
