Doctrine of the Mean — 未发谓之中
The phrase “joy, anger, sorrow, and delight not yet aroused—this is called the Center” names a still, unmanifest state of human nature itself: not emotion in motion, but the quiet ground from which emotion arises. In the opening chapter of the *Doctrine of the Mean*, this “Center” is not mere calmness or absence—it is the “great root of the world,” the undisturbed, unswerving source of all things, aligned with the mandate of Heaven. When feelings do arise, they are “harmonious” only if they express themselves “in due measure”—neither suppressed nor excessive, neither delayed nor rushed, but fitting to circumstance and principle. Harmony, then, is not uniformity but right response; the Center is not emptiness but integrity held before action begins. The text insists these are not ideals for sages alone: to “realize the Center and Harmony” is to align oneself so deeply with what is fundamental that heaven and earth find their proper places, and all things flourish. This is not mystical withdrawal but attentive presence—where restraint before expression and precision in expression both serve the same rootedness. The passage invites no grand transformation, only recognition: what lies beneath feeling is already whole.
