Analects — 君子喻于义
The phrase “The gentleman understands righteousness; the small person understands profit” draws a sharp contrast not of social rank but of orientation—what each kind of person notices first, values most, and acts upon without reflection. Found in the *Analects*, chapter *Li Ren* (The Neighborhood of Virtue), these lines present “righteousness” (*yi*) as what is fitting by principle, what aligns with what ought to be—not as abstract duty, but as immediate discernment in concrete situations. “Profit” (*li*), by contrast, names what satisfies personal desire or advantage, taken as the primary measure of action. As one commentary explains, the gentleman and small person may face the very same circumstance—a piece of silver left on the road—and yet see entirely different things: one sees obligation, the other opportunity. This is not about rejecting material need—indeed, the *Analects* elsewhere affirms care for parents and practical conduct—but about the habitual lens through which experience is interpreted. The gentleman’s clarity arises not from suppressing desire but from a settled attention to what is fitting; the small person’s fixation on gain does not imply malice, only a narrowed field of vision. The distinction lies in what each “understands” (*yu*)—not as belief, but as spontaneous recognition.
