Analects — 克己复礼为仁
“克己复礼为仁” names a decisive turning point in the Analects—not an abstract ideal, but a concrete practice rooted in daily conduct. In the *Yan Yuan* chapter, Confucius answers his disciple Yan Hui’s question about ren (often rendered “benevolence” or “humaneness”) with these words: “To master oneself and return to ritual propriety is ren. If one day you master yourself and return to ritual propriety, the whole world will ascribe ren to you.” The commentary clarifies that “mastering oneself” means overcoming private desires, while “returning to ritual propriety” means aligning action with the patterns of *li*—not mere formalism, but the embodied expression of moral order. Crucially, the passage insists this work begins and ends with the self: “To practice ren depends on oneself—does it depend on others?” It then specifies how: “Do not look at what is contrary to ritual propriety; do not listen to what is contrary to ritual propriety; do not speak what is contrary to ritual propriety; do not act on what is contrary to ritual propriety.” This fourfold restraint is not suppression, but reorientation—turning attention back to the natural, shared standards already present in ritual forms. The Analects thus presents ren not as a distant virtue to be attained, but as the immediate fruit of disciplined, attentive participation in humanly enacted order.
