Tao Te Ching — 祸兮福所倚
This line—“Disaster rests upon the edge of fortune; fortune hides within disaster”—captures a core insight of the Tao Te Ching: apparent opposites are not fixed, but dynamically interwoven. It appears in Chapter Fifty-Eight, where the text observes how political calm can conceal unrest, and how sudden success may invite overreach or collapse. The passage does not urge avoidance of either state, nor does it promise reversal as reward or punishment; rather, it presents their mutual dependence as a natural feature of how things unfold. Elsewhere in the Tao Te Ching, similar patterns appear—victory treated like mourning, strength revealed through yielding, the greatest fullness resembling emptiness. These are not paradoxes to be solved, but descriptions of a world where extremes soften into each other, like breath turning from inhalation to exhalation. The text offers no technique to control this rhythm, only quiet attention to its presence. When read alongside related passages—such as the reminder that “the Way is constant in non-action” or that “sages act without contending”—this line deepens into a call for humility before change, not mastery over it. Fortune and disaster are not destinations, but moments in an unbroken flow.
