Book of Songs — 七月流火

“July’s fire flows westward” marks the turning of the year—not with a calendar, but with the stars. In the *Book of Songs*, this line opens the long, rhythmic poem *July*, from the *Bin Feng* section, where the movement of the star Antares—called “fire”—signals autumn’s approach: by July’s dusk, the star has begun its descent in the western sky, a celestial cue that winter is coming. The next line, “In September, garments are distributed,” follows naturally: as the air cools and frost nears, people prepare for cold days ahead. The poem does not speak in abstractions; it names winds that bite (“the first month’s wind howls, the second month’s wind stings”), lists tasks month by month—ploughing in the third month, harvesting in the eighth, hunting foxes in the tenth—and shows families working together, women gathering mulberry leaves or spinning yarn, children carrying food to the fields. Even the field overseer rejoices at their diligence. Though later commentators note this poem was composed to recall the arduous origins of royal rule—how early Zhou leaders taught farming, timed labor by stars, and cared for the people’s basic needs—the lines themselves dwell in the tangible: heat fading, cloth woven, hands busy, seasons turning without pause.
