Great Learning — 在明明德
The phrase *in mingming de*—“to illuminate the luminous virtue”—opens the Great Learning not as a command but as a recognition: what we call “virtue” is already present, an innate endowment from Heaven, “luminous” by nature yet sometimes obscured. This is not about acquiring something new, but uncovering what is already there—like clearing mist from a mirror. The Great Learning treats this illumination as the first movement of learning itself, the starting point from which all else follows. It is paired immediately with *in qinmin* (“to renew the people”), understood here as extending that inner clarity outward, helping others shed inherited habits and distortions just as one does for oneself. Both movements culminate in *zhi yu zhi shan*: “abiding in the highest good,” where “abiding” means settling firmly, without wavering, in what is perfectly aligned with principle—not as an abstract ideal, but as the concrete limit of right action and clear understanding. The passage anchors the entire work: it names the path’s direction, its scope (inner and outer), and its unwavering standard. This is the opening line of the *Jing Yi Zhang*, the foundational chapter that sets the terms for everything that follows in the Great Learning.
