Analects — 己所不欲,勿施于人
“Do not impose on others what you do not desire for yourself” is one of the most widely recognized ethical statements in the Analects—a concise formulation of *shu*, or “reciprocity.” It appears in the *Yan Yuan* chapter, where Confucius frames it not as a standalone rule but as part of a deeper moral posture rooted in self-awareness and sincerity. As later commentators clarify, this saying presumes *zhong*—“exerting oneself fully”—as its necessary counterpart: only when one first strives to align one’s own conduct with principle can one rightly extend that standard to others. The passage does not ask us to imagine abstract preferences, but to reflect on concrete actions we ourselves would resist—whether harsh words, unfair treatment, or neglect—and then refrain from enacting them. It is not about universalizing subjective likes and dislikes, but about grounding judgment in shared human experience: “What I would not suffer, I must not inflict.” This idea reappears across classical texts not as a psychological insight but as a disciplined practice—tied closely to ritual propriety (*li*), moral cultivation, and the daily work of becoming trustworthy in relation to others.
