Mencius — 恻隐之心
“Caring concern for others” is not a rare virtue but a universal human capacity, according to the *Mencius*. In the *Gongsun Chou I* chapter, Mencius argues that this feeling—called *ceyin zhi xin*, or “the heart-mind of alarm and compassion”—arises spontaneously in anyone who suddenly sees a child about to fall into a well. It appears before thought of reward, reputation, or even self-interest; it is immediate, uncalculated, and deeply felt. Mencius identifies this response as the root of *ren* (benevolence), just as shame, reverence, and moral discernment are roots of righteousness, ritual propriety, and wisdom. These four “sprouts” are not implanted from outside; they belong to us by nature, like seeds already present in the soil. What differs among people is not their endowment but whether they nurture what is already there. The *Mencius* insists that such feelings are not occasional impulses but stable dispositions—latent yet accessible, requiring only reflection and cultivation to flourish. As the text observes, even in hardship or abundance, human nature remains the same; circumstances may obscure the sprouts, but they do not destroy them. To recognize this shared capacity is to see how moral life begins—not in doctrine or decree, but in the quiet, urgent stir of care.
