Mencius — 独乐乐不如众乐乐
What does it mean to truly enjoy something? In the *Mencius*, this question arises not as abstract philosophy but as a direct challenge to a ruler’s conscience. The passage begins with a deceptively simple exchange: “Is it more joyful to enjoy music alone, or to enjoy it with others?” The reply is immediate: “Not as joyful as enjoying it with others.” Then comes the deeper probe: “Is it more joyful to enjoy it with a few, or with many?” Again, the answer is clear: “Not as joyful as enjoying it with many.” These lines anchor a larger argument in the *Liang Hui Wang Xia* chapter, where Mencius contrasts two kinds of royal pleasure—pleasure that isolates and pleasure that includes. When the king drums and plays, if the people respond with furrowed brows and lamentations—“How has our ruler’s love of music driven us to such despair?”—it reveals a failure of shared joy. But when they hear the same music and rejoice, asking only whether the king is well enough to play, their delight confirms harmony between ruler and ruled. The *Mencius* does not praise private contentment; it insists that genuine joy emerges only when pleasure is extended, made public, and rooted in the people’s well-being.
