Tao Te Ching — 道可道,非常道
The opening line of the *Tao Te Ching*—“The Way that can be spoken is not the constant Way”—immediately unsettles our confidence in language and definition. It does not deny speech or naming outright, but draws a sharp distinction: what we name, teach, or codify—whether as doctrine, law, or reputation—is not the enduring, formless reality that underlies all things. This “constant Way” is prior to naming; it is the unnamed source from which heaven and earth emerge, and the named realm through which all things take shape and grow. The passage invites us to hold two perspectives at once: observing the subtle origin of things through “constant non-desire,” and tracing their unfolding boundaries through “constant desire.” These are not opposites but complementary angles on one mystery—“profound, and more profound”—the very gateway to all wonder. The *Tao Te Ching* begins not with answers, but with this quiet, radical suspension of certainty.
